Robert Orpen, a 7 year resident of Wareham and former 40 year resident in North Carolina and formerly of Charlestown, passed into eternal life on Sunday, December 9, 2012 at McCarthy Care Center Hospice House in Sandwich following a lengthy illness. He was 72 years old. Bob was born in Boston on July 23, 1940, a son of the late Henry Orpen and Jeanie (UrQuhart) Orpen. He grew up in Charlestown where he attended the Boston Public School system. Bob enlisted into the United States Army on November 9, 1961 and served his country proudly and honorably during the Vietnam Conflict. He was discharged on November 8, 1963 with the rank of Private First Class. Bob taught ballroom dancing for over 40 years where he began his career with Arthur Murray Studios in Boston before moving to North Carolina where he opened his own studios in the Wilmington, North Carolina and Winston-Salem, North Carolina areas. He was very involved in the competitive field of ballroom dancing and judged many competitions all over the world. Following his retirement, Bob donatated his time to the Wareham Y.M.C.A. He was a member of the Wareham Lodge of Elks. Bob is the devoted father of John Gregory Orpen and James Christopher Orpen. He is the beloved brother of John Orpen of Hull, Jean Raso of N.H., Carol Orpen of Malden, Patricia Simard of Easton, Donald Orpen of N.H., Richard Orpen of Randolph and the late Henry Orpen Jr. He is also survived by many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a celebration of Bob’s life Thursday, December 13, 2012 from 2 to 4 p.m. with a Memorial Service at 3:00 p.m. in The Carr Funeral Home, 220 Bunker Hill St. Charlestown. Ruth C. “Gram” (Thorpe) Andrea, a longtime resident of Charlestown, passed into eternal life on Saturday, December 8, 2012 at her home in Charlestown after an extended illness. She was 94 years old. Ruth was born in Boston on August 17, 1918, a daughter of the late Percival Thorpe and Ethel (Pratt) Thorpe. She grew up in Marblehead where she attended school there and graduated from Marblehead High School while being a Nanny for a family in Marblehead. Ruth worked as a bookeeper for Marriot Hotels for several years in the Boston area. Ruth took special pride in preparing meals for the pastor at St. Francis De Sales Church. Ruth is the beloved wife of the late Michael F. Andrea. She is the devoted mother of Mary McKenna of Port Richey, FL., Carol Walsh of Charlestown and the late Manuel Andrea and Louise Becker. She is the loving Gram to 9 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and 8 great-great-grandchildren. She is the beloved sister of Mildred Gallagher of Charlestown and the late Edna Fournier and Frances Ringer. John E. Houlihan, a lifelong resident of Charlestown, passed into eternal life on Tuesday, December 11, 2012 unexpectedly at his home in Charlestown. He was 81 years old. John was born in Boston on June 11, 1931, a son of the late James E. Houlihan and Lucy M. (Smith) Houlihan. He grew up in Charlestown where he attended Boston Public Schools and graduated from Charlestown High School in 1949. John worked for over 30 years with the City of Boston as a custodian in the Boston Public School system. John was a member of The Old Charlestown Schoolboys Association and was involved with the Charlestown Boys Club for many years. He was an avid sports fan and enjoyed the Patriots. John is the beloved husband of the late Florence C. “Flossie” (Coffey) Houlihan. He is the loving father of Ann Marie Houlihan of Saugus, John Houlihan and his wife Ellen of Charlestown, Joseph Houlihan and his wife Jean of Charlestown and James Houlihan and his wife Alice of Nahant. He is the loving Grandfather of many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He is the beloved brother of Marion Simpson of Charlestown, Lucy Gibbon of Charlestown and the late Rose Newton, Bridget Thornton, Peter, Edward and James Houlihan. He is the loving uncle of Christine Ostrander of Kentucky and many other nieces and nephews. She was 69 years old. Mary was born in Boston on April 14, 1943, a daughter of the late Henry McNamee and Ellen (McCarthy) McNamee. She grew up in Charlestown where she attended the Boston Public School system. Mary worked as a Health Aide for Intercity Homemakers for several years and was a volunteer at Melrose-Wakefield Hospital for 5 years. “SHE MADE The PROGRAM.” Mary is the beloved wife of 48 years to Phillip Griffis. She is the devoted mother of Patrick Griffis of Cambridge and Patricia Griffis of Everett. Pat worked as a Home Health Aide in Charlestown for several years before moving to Newburyport and working with the Haverhill Visiting Nurse Association as a Home Health Aide for over 27 years. Pat is the devoted mother of Donna Dacey of Charlestown, Charles Power of Seabrook, New Hampshire, Bobby Power of Everett, Joey Power of Somersworth, New Hampshire, Anthony Power of Revere and Tina Gillen of Somersworth, New Hampshire. Jim retired from the Long Shoreman’s Union where he was a former treasurer. He was a founding member of the Cronin Club in Charlestown, MA. He served in US Army during World War II and Korea where he was a tank commander. He was an avid gardener. He was predeceased by his wife Elizabeth (Brooks) O’Halloran and his siblings, Mary Glennon, Louise Toppham, John, Martin, Patrick and Robert O’Halloran. Mary was a dedicated and devoted homemaker and spent all of her adult life caring for her husband and 7 children. Shaina was a homemaker who dedicated her young adult life to the caring of her 4 sons. Shaina is the beloved wife of Edinson Suazo. She is the loving mother of Riley Tejeda, Reardon, Edinson and Stephen Suazo. She is the devoted daughter of Joanne (Libby) Coleman and Stephen Coleman. She is the beloved grandaughter of William “Matches” McGrath and the late Patricia McGrath and the late Stephen and Pauline Coleman. She is the loving niece of Shawna and Thomas McGrath and survived by many other nieces and nephews. Mrs. Thelma Mae (Birch) Dowd, a resident of Andover died at her home on Thursday evening, February 14, 2013. Thelma was the beloved wife of the late Francis J. Dowd, Sr. Born in Wyoming Minnesota, she was the beloved daughter of the late Theodore and Elsie (Thornquist) Birch. She was also the loving sister of the late John Birch. Thelma was a homemaker who readily opened her home to friends, friends of her children, her extended family and neighbors. She had a welcoming dispostion and a wonderful, wry sense of humor. She lovingly hosted annual barbeques for family and friends. Thelma enjoyed playing solitaire and watching her favorite TV shows. She will be sorely missed by her loving children: Kathy M. and her husband Paul M. Fitzmeyer of Haverhill; Debra J. and her husband Walter Crookes of Hampstead, New Hampshire; Shelly and her husband Craig S. Tetreault of Andover; Francis J. Dowd, Jr. of Andover and Jason M. and his wife Gail Dowd of Wilmington; sister Joanne Lepine of Andover, grandchildren Ellen H. and Emily A. Fitzmeyer; sister-in-law Irene Birch and several nieces and nephews. Her services will be private with a memorial service planned at a later date. James J. Feeney, Jr., Retired BPD., 88, of Wells, ME, formerly of Charlestown, MA and Dorchester, MA. Died on March 3, 2013 The beloved husband of 65 years to Rita T. (O’Connell) Jim lived life fully and well. Son of the late James J. Feeney and Mary (King) Feeney. Jim was raised in Charlestown, MA, along with his brother, John “Bud” Feeney, and sisters, Helen Annesse and Dorothy Jarvie ,all of whom pre-deceased him. In December 1941, he joined the US Navy, and served as Chief Petty Officer on the USS Patoka in the South Atlantic and South Pacific, including at the invasion of Okinawa. In January 1951, he joined the Boston Police, a department he loved, eventually retiring in 1983 with the rank of Deputy Superintendent. He lived for his family: his devoted wife, Rita, and sons and daughters-in-law: Jim and Jean of Fairmont, MN, Mike and Nancy of Canton, MA, Richard and Jean of Weymouth, MA, Jack and Ann of Weymouth, MA, Dan and Sharon of Lehigh Acres, FL, and Bob of Plymouth, MA. He is also survived by many loving grandchildren and great grandchildren, all of whom he cherished. He died peacefully – with his wife by his side – giving comfort to his family in his last hours. Jim was a loving husband and father and a loyal and thoughtful friend. Relatives and friends are warmly invited to attend the visiting hours on Wednesday 4-8pm in the Keohane Funeral Home, 785 Hancock Street, Quincy. A Celebration of Life service will be held in the funeral home on Thursday morning at 9:15am followed by a Funeral Mass in Sacred Heart Church , 55 Commercial Street, Weymouth, on Thursday, March 7, 2013, at 10:30 a.m. Burial in Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne. Florence M. (Heidelman) MacDonald, a 50 year resident of Charlestown, entered into eternal life unexpectedly on Monday, March 11, 2013 at her home in Charlestown. She was 87 years old. Florence was born in Brooklyn, New York on April 8, 1925, a daughter of the late William Heidelman and Sofie (Merz) Heidelman. She grew up in Ridgewood, New York where she attended schools there and graduated high school there. Florence worked as a Legal Secretary for Wolf, Greenfield & Sacks Law Offices in Boston for over 30 years. She enjoyed doing crossword puzzles, baking, sewing, gardening and traveling to Falmouth. Florence is the devoted and loving mother of William P. MacDonald and his wife Amanda of Charlestown. She is the wife of John F. MacDonald. She is the sister of the late Sonny Heidelman. Margaret M. (Doherty) Martell, a longtime resident of Charlestown, entered into eternal life on Tuesday, March 12, 2013 at the Marian Manor Nursing Home in South Boston following an extended illness. She was 84 years old. Margaret was born in Belfast, Ireland on November 22, 1928, a daughter of the late John Doherty and Catherine (McBrearly) Doherty. She grew up in Chelsea and attended St. Rose Parochial School and graduated from St. Rose High School in Chelsea. She was a switchboard operator for New England Telephone Company for several years and also worked for Dupont Company in Boston. Margaret enjoyed playing bingo, going to yard sales and most of all spending quality time with her family. Margaret is the beloved wife of the late John L. “Lou” Martell. She is the devoted mother of John and Cheryl Martell of Billerica, Steven Martell of Boston, David and Mary Martell of Chestnut Hill, Daniel and Kerri Martell of Reading and the late Kevin Martell and Paul Martell. She is the loving Nana to Shannon Tackaberry, Annie Martell, Jack Martell, Owen Martell and Emily Martell and her great-grandaughters; Sadie and Annabelle. She is the beloved sister of Mary MacDougall of Groveland, Joseph Doherty of South Carolina, and the late Michael Doherty, Kathleen Gaudet and John Doherty.
